Babs Young writes: This family joined us for dinner at the Dockside last week.

My experience of swans has been mixed.  They are large, assertive birds and have had no compunctions about letting me know when I have trespassed on their territory, particularly with respect to the peninsula near the Writing Studio and Bait Shop.  But seven of them kept me company during a difficult time in my life.  I walked the beaches of Lake Michigan, flinging bad poetry into the wind.  They glided along, listening intently, without comment.  The very best kind of therapists.

Last night Cora Stoppert and I sat on her deck on the bluff over the Bay and watched large birds fly past below.  I wanted them to be cranes, but she said they were swans.  She knows a great deal more than I do.  I would bet on her if I were you.

Every week photographer Babs Young captures moments in northern Michigan, and every week she sends one to Torch Lake Views just for you. You can find more of her photos at the Babs Young Photo Archives and on her Blue Heaven Flickr photostream.
